This is the heartwarming true story of an Irish-American Catholic family, and their close-knit group of five brothers growing up in Waterloo, Iowa, during the days of the Great Depression and the beginning of World War II. It is a look back at a slice of Americana during the early years of the1940s. The movie opens with the progression of the boys Catholic Baptisms. There is also sister, Genevieve, making the Sullivans a happy family of eight. As the boys grow, they are doted upon by their mother and sister, and given stern, but loving guidance by their father, who is a railroad freight conductor. Each day, the boys climb the water tower by the tracks and wave to their father as he passes by on the train. The brothers are shown getting into their fair share of trouble growing up: a fight, a near drowning (after which their mother makes them promise not to set foot on a boat again until they are adults), and accidentally flooding the kitchen. The cast includes Academy Award® winning actor Thomas Mitchell as the patriarch, with Selena Royle and Anne Baxter rounding out the cast. Under the title: The Sullivans, this film was nominated for an Academy Award® in the category of Writing for Best Original Motion Picture Story of 1944. The Fighting Sullivans is a must-have film for every family! 2-Disc Set. Region 1
